CNY break

Posted on: January 25, 2009

Well, Chinese New Year is here and I’m having a break from my stranglehold of work (or at least, I’m giving myself a break. I shouldn’t be having one if I want to survive, really).

I came back with my Uncle’s car and his family. We started off through the night to avoid a jam, but weren’t we wrong. There was a horrendous queue there already, and our only guess was the booths to check passports weren’t all open in the middle of the night. So there started the sluggish 2.5 hour queue, just to get from this little bit of Singapore to the bridge. I’m sure if we walked, we could get there in at least quarter the time.

More queues later. Queue in JB. Queue for toilets. Queue for toll paying. Queue for breakfast in Seremban! As my uncle said, the theme of the year might as well be ‘patience’.

We spent our day at my grandmother’s house. Half of mine was uneventfully spent pigging it away, both for today and yesterday. I guess it was a consequence of the long trip and the sleepless night before, as well as lack of sleep in NUS. Anyway, all the meals were sumptuous, my aunt cooked with my grandmother, and the grand product was good. The first thing my sisters said when they saw me was to remark that my legs were thinner, but my grandmother’s bathroom scale told me that I haven’t gained or lost any weight at all. Things were different after one day though. My weight was starting to hike (but just by a little), after two days of Tampin stay.

Church was at 830 am today, so that everyone could start the preparations for reunion dinner early. Tsai Sheng and Chia Zhen were back from Russia, Tsai Sheng with his Russian chocolates and new hair-cut. Didn’t prevent him from getting pijak-ed though, haha. All the teachers-to-be have come back for a short break from training too. Nevertheless, the church wasn’t too full. Anyway it will fill up tomorrow.

I brought some school work back to do, especially those due on Wednesday. So far I’ve only managed to do the teeniest bit of unsuccessful project research. All the information I wanted to find were quite new, and the journals that contained them have to be subscribed or paid for. So I didn’t end up which much stuff. I have come to realize that doing a simple search in university is so much more difficult than doing so in secondary school, where the information needed was on a much more basic level and you could just glean them from the net and books. Now even NUS libraries weren’t much help! In fact I couldn’t find a single book/journal on what I needed.

Anyways, I’m going back on Tuesday morning. A rather quick end for a CNY holiday, but it’s unavoidable to avoid the nightmares of another potential jam.
